Yu Family

2015 was about me rethinking why I do what I do. For me photography has always been about telling stories that matter most and using my art to give back (while making a few bucks at the same time!).  Eight and a half years ago in San Diego I was just embarking on a journey of discovering what it meant to do photography meaningfully.

I will say that Mike and Judy were two of the very first people to ever believe in my work as a way of making a difference in this world. Back in 2007 together with a few friends, I had just begun a college collective of artists who cared deeply about justice among the poor in Africa and saw our art as a means of giving back. Soon we were positioning ourselves to sell our art and have 100% of the after-cost proceeds go towards a few non-profits that served the poor in Africa. That year I was approached by Judy who was looking for a way to do party favors without them having to be so party-favorish at her upcoming wedding…upon seeing my work the two of them decided to purchase several of my prints to give away to their wedding guests. In the end we were able to give a considerable sum towards supporting orphans in Africa through International Justice Mission and World Vision.  Back then I was floored by how far we went with this simple little idea. Today I still am. It was Mike and Judy’s belief in my work that has given me courage even today, to continue what I started with 7% of my proceeds today going towards giving back to meaningful causes. Never in my dreams did I think I’d ever get to be doing this.

Last fall I was sweetly surprised to bump into Mike at a friend’s BBQ in Pasadena and we reconnected. They spoke with the same vigor and passion for change that they did then. 8 and a half years later after our first meeting they had their firstborn son, Remy Jeriah Yu. I was so honored when Judy asked me capture their new family with little Pudgy their dog. Of course, there didn’t have to be much convincing.

Last Sunday they dedicated Remy at church and I was so glad to be there to witness it and and smile upon his beautiful face.

Thank you Mike and Judy for believing in me as much as you have. The power of your support goes beyond words.

Hanson Family | Family Maternity Session in Glendora, CA

I love capturing love. And I also love capturing the innocence of children. Probably mostly because I still feel like a kid at heart.  Last year I had the opportunity of shooting the Hansons’ family portraits right before Christmas. This year I had the honors of shooting these exciting four again plus one! Their two girls are a total trip with the kindest sweetest hearts (not to mention the best flower pickers ever). The instant I saw them, they both came running up to me with squeals of “Marifa!” Caleb and Hannah are expecting in November and I was so overjoyed to get to capture this momentous time of their lives, family style.  I love that they decided to make it a family occasion. Because I knew how important it was to them both to get photos of just the two of them also, I made sure that happened. Enjoy the love!

Faith, Matt and Parker | Monrovia Canyon Family Portraits

Getting asked to take photos of your sister and her family is probably one of the highest honors I can have as a photographer…the high honors came when Faith asked me to take their holiday photos in time for her soon to be ordered cards. The photographs are always a little more special when someone that close to your heart is the subject of them. A little tight for time, and struggling for some decent lighting during the 10-11 slot I had, I was nicely overwhelmed by these stunners that came out…and even hit the rim lighting on the nail. There are way too many good ones to share of this gorgeous family. Thanks to this shoot, Parker’s little face will be posted on the front of my refrigerator for a year or mas (I tend to keep the oldies up there). Thank you so much Faith, Matt and Parker for letting me do this shoot!

Aren’t they so attractive??

Mommy and Daddy sandwiches are the best.

…stay tuned for more holiday shoots!

The Chan Clan | Newport Beach Family Portrait Session

If there’s one thing to know about the Chan Clan it’s the fact that they know how to show you a good time. When I was younger, I had the privilege of having four uncles who knew how to spoil my sister and I. From the time I was in my teeny toddler years to my teenage years, my Uncle Curtis was one who knew how to give my sister and I a fun ride. When times were dull as a kid, Uncle Curtis would take us around on fun excursions to anywhere and everywhere exciting that my parents might have lacked the energy for – Seaworld, Disneyland, Mission Beach, boogie boarding, golfing, and the list would go on and on.  Today I am so happy that he’s passed that love juice onto his wife, and four kids Michelle, Jonathan, Grace and Matthew. From spending just a few hours with them, I can see the Chan family’s spice for life has continued on even past my childhood years. I could see so much joy in their family as oodles of giggles and laughter were captured on my camera from the shoot.

Each year they go on a photo excursion to get their yearly family portraits taken, to be sent out on Christmas cards. My Aunty Mae and Uncle Curtis are a very well connected couple and typically will send out a couple hundred Christmas cards to friends and family each year. I like to call her the Martha Stewart in our family. Not only she is super gifted at hospitality and entertaining, she also has her own floral business she started from the ground up from which she can boast over 20 years of floral design and event planning experience. Out of all the people she could have asked, this year I was SO privileged to be asked by Aunty Mae to do their Christmas photos! Don’t you think she did a splendid job picking out their outfits? Here are the photos that entailed! Enjoy : )
