Travel Diaries | 7 Days in Hawaii

Happy 2012! Okay, I rarely do 2 posts in one week. But this week a miracle happened and somehow you’re seeing this post up. I know you’ve all been waiting for these babies…so eat ’em up, they’re here to stay. Over the holidays, Robbie and I had the chance to go to our home away from home…the Hawaiian Islands. It’s a family tradition my family has had since I was 13. My grandma being born and raised here, my father making frequent visits there as a child, and our love of paradise all just contribute to the fact that it’s been our natural instinct to stay knitted to this place. This year I was particularly excited to show Robbie my typical stomping grounds on the west side of Oahu — Ko’Olina where the view is beautiful and the breeze is warm.

I guess you could say that my New Year’s Resolutions for photography are existent, few and far between. But I did make them this year. #1 is to keep up an ongoing inspiration and style board describing my photographic voice, style and what I’m aiming for…made possible via my account with Pinterest…coming all too soon. #2 is to slow down my shooting pace and take cleaner, clearer shots. It’s the first one I’m really excited about. But together the two will prove to be a powerful force. I guess my trip to Hawaii was a good beginning for some of these inspirations and moods.

And of course there’s no escaping a trip to Leonard Jr’s Hot Malasadas, a food truck off the side of the road in Aiea where they make it live and fresh. This is the second location they’ve got and from what I’ve heard from my aunt, they are a lot fresher here. If you’ve ever watched Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate”, you’re probably familiar. Malasadas are a portuguese ethnic treat which remind me of donuts. Topped with plain sugar or cinnamon, they can be filled with chocolate, coconut, or nothing if that’s the way you like it. It all started in a hole-in-the-wall bake shop in Kahahulu in 1952. Today the tradition holds strong and they are served as an exotic desert in many fine restaurants. You can bet that the ones we scraped up were hot tasty morsels that melted in our mouths.

Maritha Mae Photography Thanks so much Katie! Your supportive words mean so much!!

Jayci – I had a feeling! I just wasn’t sure and I thought you might have already been gone. Shuckers I missed you.

Jayci Beautiful beautiful photos, Maritha! You have always had the eye for beauty! Can’t believe you were at Ko’Olina at the same time, just a day or two overlapping, I think (we flew out Christmas day). I’m going to have to someday try those malasadas (sp?). Yum! And happy new year!

Katie Loooooove this post! You totally are finding your voice and style and I love where it’s headed! Looks like you shot film for some of these goodies :)
